Power for Communities
20090505, 173836 - No commentWhilst it is widely accepted that we need to aim to produce more of our power from renewable sources, at the moment there is considerable opposition from NIMBYs to the production of greener electricity. It has been argued that this is because they like the electric to be a nice sparky yellow colour rather than green, but it could also be because they often get projects like wind turbines, dams and tidal barrages forced upon them with all the downsides going to the community, whilst all the benefits go to the multi-nation energy companies.
We should be encouraging communities to develop their own projects, designed to fit the needs and unique opportunities of each community. Every community should be able to decide for themselves on the best way to produce greener electricity in their community for the benefit of people in that community. Power sources such as tidal, solar, wind and the traditional loony favourite of placing a funnel over any gathering of politicians, should be available to communities to allow them to reduce their reliance on power gained from burning fossil fuels that have to be transported vast distances.
